The Ekaterinburg outfit 4CC casts a wide net across multiple genres: trip-hop, electronic, rap, ambient, digital punk, and sound
design. The hometown of these crisscrossing styles is linked directly to the past––and a gloomy interpretation thereof. 4CC’s
Soundcloud account is housed at the URL “Black Sverdlovsk.” (Their profile on VK goes further, jettisoning some vowels in
the spirit of classic witch house: “blvcksverdlovsk.”) The Soviets renamed Ekaterinburg in honor of a Bolshevik leader in 1924;
a revolutionary name replaced a royal equivalent. The lasting and local impression, almost a hundred years later, is not
positive. And so the music of 4CC sounds ominous or––in the words of one Russian webzine––“less than tender.”

Despite the fact 4CC is now responsible for a regional label and community, both on- and offline, there’s precious little in the
way of interviews. Guest appearances on NTS, for example, are accompanied by little more than a granular monochrome
snapshot.
On the rare occasion when a 4CC stalwart does comes forth, their words warrant special attention. “I started
playing these tracks and immediately began looking for more information online. At one point the music really got hold of me;
I got the shivers, even. I’ve been working with music my entire life, but this was the first time I recall finding something
genuinely wonderful. If you listen to these songs attentively, they'll produce a borderline psychotropic effect…”
